Horton Shines Through Adversity: A Journey from Nevada to Colorado State
As the 2019 football season unfolded, the Nevada Wolf Pack, under the guidance of head coach Jay Norvell, secured a memorable victory against Fresno State. This period would mark the beginning of a significant chapter for one standout player—Tory Horton.
Horton caught Nevada's attention during a CIF-Central Section playoff game, where his single catch for 54 yards left an indelible impression on Eric Scott and the coaching staff. Despite limited early collegiate prospects, Horton, rated a three-star prospect on 247Sports since February 2019, received his first FBS scholarship offer from Nevada. A transformative opportunity awaited him.
Emerging from a talented 7-on-7 team known as No Zone, Horton played alongside future Division I receivers Xavier Worthy, Jalen McMillan, Jeremiah Hunter, and Mac Dalena. Mike Ware, Horton's Fresno-based 7-on-7 coach, reflected, "We had all those receivers on No Zone, and now they're doing the same, if not better, at the next level." Before joining Nevada, Horton's other collegiate opportunities came from Big Sky schools Montana and Northern Colorado.
When Norvell transitioned to Colorado State in 2022, Horton followed, ready to excel on a new stage. His impact was immediate and profound. In the 2022 season, Horton caught 71 passes for 1,131 yards and eight touchdowns, demonstrating his skill and consistency. Horton’s performance in the 2023 season further solidified his reputation, with 96 receptions for 1,136 yards and eight touchdowns, a testament to his unwavering dedication and rising proficiency.

Faced with the options of declaring for the NFL Draft or entering the transfer portal, Horton chose loyalty, returning to Colorado State to conclude his collegiate career. Horton's return has set the stage for noteworthy contests, including Colorado State hosting Colorado for the first time since 1996. In a recent game, Horton electrified fans with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown and led the team with 65 receiving yards before being sidelined by an injury. Reflecting on his status, Coach Norvell remarked, "Tory is sore, but I think he's going to be available to play, so we'll see how he progresses over the week."
As a two-time All-Mountain West first-team selection, Horton has continually demonstrated his caliber. His performance in last year’s overtime loss to Colorado was exemplary, with a career-high 16 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
