The Dallas Cowboys are eyeing their upcoming Week 3 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens with cautious optimism, as they contend with a series of injuries that could impact their roster. The team's preparation began under careful management, focusing on the recovery and readiness of several key players.
Key Players Sidelined
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, a crucial figure in the Cowboys' offensive lineup, was notably absent from practice due to an ankle injury. Alongside him, cornerback Trevon Diggs also missed practice, nursing a foot injury. However, both players were seen walking around the locker room without apparent discomfort, sparking hope for their return.
Coach Mike McCarthy provided an update on their status, stating, "He's going to start off in the pre-practice and then we'll evaluate from there. Hopefully, he can get through the whole practice and see how it goes. This is the first time giving it a chance." The team anticipates a clearer assessment of their conditions after Thursday’s padded practice.
Recovery and Rehabilitation Efforts
In addition to Lamb and Diggs, DaRon Bland caught attention as he worked off to the side with the team's director of rehab, Britt Brown. Bland, who missed the Week 2 clash against the New Orleans Saints due to a procedure for a stress fracture in his foot, is steadily progressing in his recovery.
The Cowboys' defense, which struggled significantly against the Saints by conceding touchdowns on each of their first six drives, sorely missed the presence of Bland. His return could provide a necessary boost to a unit still finding its footing this season.
Tight end Jake Ferguson also faced limitations in practice on Wednesday. Ferguson, who missed the Week 2 game against the Saints because of a bone bruise and MCL sprain, sustained his injuries in the second half of the Cowboys’ Week 1 victory over the Browns. Despite his limited participation, Coach McCarthy remains optimistic. "Jake's a big part of the heart and soul of that locker room. No question about it. I was told he had a good workout today. That's good news. But we'll see how he comes in tomorrow and so forth. I'm hopeful he can play," he shared.
Rookie Woes and Responsibilities
On the defensive front, rookie defensive tackle Mazi Smith had to cut his practice session short on Wednesday after experiencing a back injury. Smith's early exit is a reminder of the physical toll that the NFL exacts, even on fresh recruits eager to make their mark.
Despite these setbacks, the Cowboys continue to prepare, placing faith in their young talents to step up in the absence of their injured stars. Veteran quarterback Dak Prescott acknowledged the contributions of younger players like Luke Schoonmaker and undrafted rookie Brevyn Spann-Ford. "Everywhere. I guess you can say that those young tight ends did a good job. Simply, they did a good job. As I've said throughout the week, Jake's more than just a tight end on Sunday. He's an aggressor. He brings a physical nature to this group. He's got a mentality that other guys feed off of, that's very contagious, but those other guys did play well. They did their job and stepped up. They made some plays, but [the game] just got away from us," Prescott observed.
As the Cowboys manage their injuries and ready themselves for an imperative Week 3, the team’s ability to adapt and perform under adversity will be closely monitored. With key players potentially returning and the contributions of rising talents, the Cowboys are focused on bouncing back and delivering a strong performance against a formidable Ravens team.
