Day 14 of the Eagles training camp was marked by a slew of injuries, leaving several key players either sidelined or hobbling through practice. The most concerning perhaps was the status of Mekhi Becton, the starting right guard, who left the field prematurely due to a right leg injury.
Becton, who had worn a brace on his right knee last season with the New York Jets, was seen favoring the same leg in previous sessions. Despite the early exit, Becton reassured his condition, stating, "I finished practice." When probed further about his status, he simply responded, "good."
Dickerson Soldiers On
Meanwhile, Landon Dickerson, another key player, appeared to be in discomfort throughout most of the drills. After a tough one-on-one rep with Milton Williams, he emerged limping but managed to finish the session. This perseverance is in line with Dickerson’s track record, as he had been sidelined earlier in the training camp due to a lacerated toe but hasn't missed a single day of open practices since his return.
At one point, Dickerson left the practice momentarily due to a knee injury but showed resilience by returning later in the same session. With this level of determination, Dickerson continues to be a crucial asset for the team despite the ongoing injury woes.
Steen and Toth Step Up
Second-team guard Tyler Steen is currently out with an ankle injury, which was aggravated during the second preseason game. As a result, Brett Toth stepped up to assume the first-team right guard responsibilities. Toth's performance in the absence of key players will be critical as the team moves forward.
Absentees Impact Practice
The laundry list of absentees from Day 14 also included Gabe Hall, Matt Hennessy, E.J. Jenkins, Lane Johnson, Joseph Ngata, Moro Ojomo, Albert Okwuegbunam, Caden Sterns, John Ross, and Johnny Wilson. Their absence was noticeable and affected the overall execution of the drills.
Looking Ahead
The Eagles are scheduled for a full practice on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with a walkthrough planned for Monday. The onus now falls on the coaching staff to navigate through these injury troubles and keep the team conditioned and prepared for the upcoming challenges.
Injuries are an inevitable part of football, and while they pose immediate concerns, the resilience shown by players like Becton and Dickerson offers a glimmer of hope. As the training camp progresses, the Eagles will look to manage their roster prudently, ensuring their key players are fit and ready for the season ahead.
