Perry Fewell, the league's Senior Vice President of Officiating Administration, underscored this by stating, "At this level of competition emotions will run high, but no amount of emotion should give way to demeaning and offensive words, taunting, or other non-football acts."

The Cost of Unsportsmanlike Conduct

The league has made it clear that unsportsmanlike conduct could result in a player's ejection if they commit two violations. Taunting and violent gestures have come under particular scrutiny as major offenses. This focus was not without financial implications, as fines for such actions during the latter part of the regular season totaled $122,444. In 2023, 484 fines were issued, translating to a rate of 1.17%. As the league considers increasing fines in the 2024 season, it aims to discipline players while minimizing suspensions during the crucial postseason.
