Teddy Bridgewater Returns to the NFL with the Detroit Lions
The New Chapter in Bridgewater's Career
In an unexpected yet promising move, Teddy Bridgewater is making his comeback to the NFL, joining the Detroit Lions. At 32, the seasoned quarterback is bringing a wealth of experience back to a familiar team, having played for the Lions earlier in his career.
Bridgewater kickstarted his NFL journey when he was picked in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. Since then, he's showcased his skills with several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, the Carolina Panthers, the Denver Broncos, and most recently, the Miami Dolphins, where he wrapped up the 2022 season with a 0-2 record. His career has seen him accumulate 33 wins out of his 65 starts, amassing 15,120 passing yards alongside 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.
From the Sidelines Back to the Field
What’s particularly intriguing about Bridgewater's return is his recent role as a high school football coach. He successfully led Miami Northwestern to a state championship, undoubtedly honing leadership qualities that he'll now bring back to the professional arena. Bridgewater himself hinted at his dual focus, stating, "We'll see how these next week-and-a-half, two weeks play out. Might be signing with a team or something and then returning back to coach high school football in February."
Impact on the Detroit Lions
Bridgewater’s return is a strategic addition to the Lions, especially as they eye the Super Bowl, with current odds ranking them second-best according to Caesars Sportsbook. The Lions' head coach, Dan Campbell, expressed his enthusiasm, noting that Bridgewater’s return enriches the team's quarterback depth. "To be able to add somebody back here that's got experience, he’s stayed in shape, he’s been throwing... it just brings a level of professionalism, veteran presence," Campbell commented. He further emphasized that Bridgewater’s presence doesn’t indicate a lack of confidence in other squad members like Hendon Hooker, adding, "Doesn't mean we're disappointed in Hooker" and "does not mean that Hooker is out."
What's clear is that Bridgewater’s signing gives the Lions a solid emergency option. As Campbell observed, "Absolutely" gives them a solid option for the emergency third quarterback and lessens their concerns there. "If something happens you’ve got your third ready to roll." His teammates respect him greatly, which, according to Campbell, is pivotal: "It’s great for our team. I think everybody in that locker room respects Teddy and what he stands for."
A Respected Veteran
The enthusiasm surrounding Bridgewater's return isn’t just about his past performance stats but his influence in the locker room as well. Campbell highlighted this unique quality, saying that Bridgewater is someone "that you feel like makes everybody around them a little bit better." This intangible asset could very well be what the Lions need as they strive for success this season.
As the NFL season unfolds, Teddy Bridgewater’s re-entry into the Lions fold isn’t just a return for the player but a rejuvenation for a team eager to capitalize on his wealth of experience and leadership skills.
