Gathering to Remember: Memorial Service for Johnny Gaudreau
Friends, family, and the hockey community came together on Monday to bid farewell to NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, whose life was tragically cut short in a cycling accident last month. The Columbus Blue Jackets forward and his younger brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were struck and killed by a drunk driver during a bicycle ride in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The brothers were in town to serve as groomsmen for their sister's wedding.
A Heartbreaking Loss
The somber event saw an outpouring of emotions from those who knew and loved Johnny Gaudreau. His Columbus Blue Jackets teammates were in attendance, along with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, emphasizing the profound impact Johnny had on the sport and those around him.
Amid the grief, Johnny's wife, Meredith Gaudreau, delivered a poignant eulogy that brought tears and smiles. She revealed that she is in her ninth week of pregnancy with their third child, a surprise that Johnny had been overjoyed about. The couple already has two young children, Noa Harper Gaudreau, born on September 30, 2022, and Johnny Edward Gaudreau, born on February 22, 2024.
"We're actually a family of five. I'm in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby. A total surprise, but again, John was beaming and so excited," Meredith shared. She continued to recount the moment she shared the news with Johnny. "I was so nervous because this was, again, a total surprise. But his reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me even though I was driving the car. After the initial excitement sank in, every time he looked at me, he would say, 'You're nuts, you know that? Three kids?'”
Cherishing the Memories
Meredith's heartfelt words captured the precious moments they shared in their final months together. "John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life," she said, highlighting a particular time that holds a special place in her heart. "There's specifically one week that I will cherish forever -- it will be my favorite week of my life out of those six months."
The tragedy also deeply affected Matthew Gaudreau's wife, Madeline, who is expecting their first child. The tight-knit Gaudreau family now faces the daunting task of supporting each other through unimaginable grief while also preparing to welcome new life into the world.
Community Support
The outpouring of support from the hockey community has been immense. Teammates, fans, and fellow players have offered condolences and shared tributes celebrating Johnny's contributions both on and off the ice. His infectious smile, competitive spirit, and dedication to his family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As the Gaudreau family navigates their new reality, the memories of Johnny and Matthew will remain close. The love and legacy they leave behind will continue to inspire those who cherish their memory.
The driver responsible for the collision has been arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto, a small step towards justice in the wake of an incalculable loss. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on celebrating the lives of two beloved brothers who left an indelible mark on everyone they encountered.
In the end, the memorial was not just about mourning the loss but also celebrating the vibrant lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. Their legacy endures in the memories of joyous moments, the love they shared, and the promise of new life to come.
